What Is a Millipede?
The name millipede comes from Latin, and it literally means “a thousand legs”. They look like worms with legs and vary in size depending on the species and what stage of life they are in. The biggest ones can reach 1.5 inches, but even a millipede of impressive size won’t be a danger to humans.
Millipedes feed on decaying organic matter, like decomposing leaves or fungi, which actually makes them beneficial for the environment. However, having millipedes in your home may indicate a problem with excessive moisture or an accumulation of debris that can encourage mold and other harmful pests.
All of them are nocturnal and have a habit of swarming in large groups, which makes them such an unpleasant guest in your home. Some millipedes also secrete an irritating substance when threatened, so try not to touch them. Skin that gets in contact with the millipede’s defense mechanism might get discolored or even irritated.
Signs of a Millipede Infestation
Because of their nocturnal activity and preference for hidden spots, it might be hard to notice you have millipedes in and around your home, but if they are thriving, you will most likely encounter them while they are moving from one place to another.
Luckily, millipedes won’t have an interest in you or your food, so they will do their best to keep out of the way. However, if you have a garden you might notice some damage, especially to freshly planted seeds.
How Did Millipedes Get into My Home or Yard?
As we mentioned before, millipedes love dark, damp places where there is plenty of room to hide. If you have decaying leaves or other plant debris in your yard, the millipedes will have a shelter and a food source. Millipedes usually get into your home if the outdoor environment is too hot or dry for them, and they might seek shelter in your attic, basement or storage units. Expect to find them under boxes of stored goods, under furniture and in other tight spaces.
Entry spaces don’t need to be big for millipedes to come inside your home. They will fit through very tight openings, but sealing your doors and windows with weatherstripping will help. Other possible entry points are your garage doors, basement doors, and windows, or crawlspace vents. Since you can’t really seal your home completely, the best way to prevent a millipede infestation is to make it less attractive to them.
How to Get rid of Millipedes?
Although harmless, millipedes can turn into a nuisance if you keep seeing swarms of them in your yard or garage. Your garden may suffer too.
